“You’re drunk,” Susanne said angrily. She’d never seen Georg like that. What time was it? He had been gone all day. It was almost midnight. Diana looked on tightlipped as Susanne pulled Georg inside.

“That is … none of your businessss, ladiesss.” Georg stumbled his way to the couch and fell down on it.

“My old man knew … how to solve … his problemsss,” he drew out, trying to hit the pillow into position.

Susanne walked over to him. Diana stood rooted to the ground, her arms folded across her chest. “What problems do you have, Georg?” Susanne said. She felt as though she was talking to a child. Even at the carnival, Georg didn’t get drunk like this. What had gotten into him? He was behaving so… immature. Very unlike Georg indeed.

“You,” he mumbled. He seemed to doze off.

Susanne stared at him. Had she heard right? She looked over to Diana, who just shrugged with an expression that seemed to say, “I told you so,” and then came over to them. She pulled Georg’s shoes off and threw a blanket over him. “Let’s go to bed, too,” Diana said with a look at the now snoring Georg who drooled on her pillow. She sighed.

Susanne shook her head. Why was she his problem? What did he mean? Then it dawned on her. He hadn’t heard the news yet. That she would be able to leave in May. Georg no longer would have to worry about her and the twins. She wouldn’t cause him sleepless nights anymore. Georg would be sad that they would leave, but his problems would be solved. He had taken care of her, as he had promised Dieter. Her problems were solved, and so were Georg’s. She would tell him the good news first thing in the morning. He wouldn’t have a reason to get drunk again. At least not over her.

When Susanne looked up, she realized that Diana had already gone to bed. With a last look at Georg, she decided to do the same. She had a tough day ahead of her.
